On 14th November 2024, the UBD Botanical Research Centre hosted students from St. John’s School, for an educational tour of our garden and living collections. The students explored Brunei’s diverse plant life and gained valuable insights into its ecological importance.

The UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC) launch

The UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC) launched four posters during the Symposium on Plants in Islamic Civilisation held on the 4th November 2024. The posters launched were UBD BRC research poster presented by Mr. Soon Boon Yu, Assistant Curator & Botanist UBD BRC. The UBD BRC research poster featured the main research activities conducted by UBD BRC on the ex-situ and in-situ conservation of Brunei’s native flora, cataloguing Brunei’s plant diversity and research on natural products and medicinal plants. The UBD BRC research poster was designed by Dyg Hazimah Mohd Din.

A poster on the local medicinal plant Litsea elliptica locally known as Pawas was also launched during the symposium. This poster featured the properties of the different parts of the Pawas plant, and was prepared by our previous intern, Lim Jenn Qi, and designed by talented local artist, Zunnuraina Raihana Md Ramlee. This poster was presented by PhD student, Raudhatun Naemah Samsul.

Two posters featuring plants in the Al-Hadeeqah Al-Mubaarakah zone at the UBD BRC—designed by past intern, Fatin Harun, was presented by Dyg Nurul Hazlina Zaini, Assistant Curator & Botanist at UBD BRC. The Al-Hadeeqah Al-Mubaarakah zone is dedicated to plants that are mentioned in the Al-Quran and Hadith and serve as living collections for educational and research purposes.

These posters highlights the continued effort and commitment of UBD BRC to biodiversity conservation, and functions as a platform to showcase the importance of plants and their conservation to a wider audience.

Here’s a look back at Day 2 of the Symposium on Plants in Islamic Civilisation on 5th November 2024, featuring an exciting workshop on "Ethnobotany: People and Plants Connection."

The day began with a session by Professor Dato Haji Mohamed bin Abdul Majid, Emeritus Professor at Universiti Malaya, who introduced participants to the field of ethnobotany and shared invaluable insights into Brunei’s indigenous plant knowledge. In the afternoon, Ms. Nurul Hazlina Zaini of the UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC) guided participants through a hands-on session focused on mounting plant specimens for preservation, followed by UBD BRC’s Mr. Amiruddin Ruslan and his engaging class on plant propagation techniques.

We are pleased to see participants proudly displaying the fruits of their labour at the end of the sessions!

On 4th November 2024, the Symposium on Plants in I

On 4th November 2024, the Symposium on Plants in Islamic Civilisation brought together experts and enthusiasts to celebrate the significance of plants in Islamic heritage. The event featured a plenary session by Professor Dato Haji Mohamed bin Abdul Majid, Emeritus Professor at Universiti Malaya, followed by seminar presentations from Dr. Norhayati Ahmad from the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER), UBD, Dyg Hajah Siti Norhayatty Haji Morni and Awg Haji Muhammad Ruzaini from Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (BKISHHB). The Symposium was co-organized by IBER and BKISHHB.

Participants had the opportunity to view exhibitions featuring plants of importance to Islam that are curated within the Al-Hadeeqah Al-Mubarakah zone at the UBD Botanical Research Centre, botanical artworks by local artists, and a demonstration of Dynamik Technologies’ izi.travel app, which guides visitors through the Al-Hadeeqah Al-Mubarakah zone. Displays of IBER and the UBD BRC’s research, education and outreach programmes also provided insights into our continued efforts in biodiversity conservation in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all speakers, exhibitors and participants for their enthusiatic participation and support in making this symposium a success.

ebode by Dynamik Technologies participated in our exhibition during the launch of the Symposium on Plants in Islamic Civilisation at the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah yesterday. They showcased digital audio guides created by ebode accessed through the izi.TRAVEL app to our Guest of Honour, Yang Mulia Dr. Hajah May Fa’ezah binti Haji Ahmad Ariffin, highlighting their collaboration with UBD Botanical Research Centre and their new project featuring the Al-Hadeeqah Al-Mubaarakah zone.

Participants also had the opportunity to win prizes by engaging in ebode’s interactive quizzes.
