Perennial herbaceous tree that can grow up to 2 m tall. Leaves are oppositely arranged, adaxially glossy, pinkish-red when young turning green when mature. Leaf blade is elliptic-oblong to lanceolate, acuminate at apex, cuneate at base with entire margin. Normally, every second ëpairí of leaves usually consist of only one leaf. Stems are flattened. Inflorescence a cyme arising at leaf axils. Fruit a reddish-purple berry and edible when mature. Seeds are small.

The local healers believe the consumption of root decoction can relieve thrush especially for children. Root decoction is also used to treat blood in the stool.

It thrives on hilly areas, in primary or secondary forests and on slopes. It prefers moist loamy soil under partial shade.

Direct planting of propagules.

Native to Southeast Asia, Indian Ocean, Australia and Pacific.
