Terrestrial erect shrub of up to 2 m tall. Leaves are simple, oppositely arranged, glabrous, thinly papery and yellowish-green. Leaf blade is oblong-elliptic to oblanceolate, acuminate at apex, cuneate to attenuate at base with entire margin and pinnate venation. Inflorescence a terminal cyme. Flowers are several to many-flowered, white with pink or red or orange on lobes. Fruit a globose or ellipsoid
The local healers use the plant to relieve tiredness (Carah). The plant is reported for its cytotoxic, antibacterial, antioxidant, anthelmintic, analgesic, antipyretic, anti- inflammatory, hypolipidemic and antidiabetic
It is often found on hillsides, in lower montane forests and freshwater swampy forest. It prefers fertile, moist but well-drained loamy soil under full shade to partial shade.
