Terrestrial small tree that can grow up to 12 m tall. Leaves are pinnately compound, alternately arranged with 5-7 pairs of leathery, glabrous and subsessile leaflets with glandular dots on the surface. The leaves are fragrant when wounded. Leaflet blades are obovate, obtuse or retuse at apex, cuneate at base with entire or toothed margin. Stems are many branched, slender and covered with straight spines. Barks are blackish and deeply fissured. Flowers are fragrant, creamy-white to red or yellow. Inflorescence a cyme developing at leaf axils. Fruit a globose whitish-brown berry with sour-sweet taste. Seeds are oblong,

It is commonly found in dry areas such as coastal regions. It prefers moist but well-drained loamy soil under full sun but it can tolerate a wide range of soils.
