An evergreen shrub or small tree up to 7 m high. Leaves are simple, alternately arranged in 2 rows and subsessile. Leaf blade is rhomboid-oblong, acute at apex, oblique at base with entire margin. Branches are drooping, arranged in whorls around the main stem. Inflorescence a spiNe forming at leaf axils. Flowers are small and often solitary. Fruit an ellipsoid red drupe and containing a single seed.

Locally, the ash of burnt leaves is mixed with cooking oil and applied externally onto the skin as remedy for skin diseases. The fruit is drank as juice to treat cancer. Antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxic

It is commonly found in lowland forests and in swampy areas. It prefers moist but well-drained loamy soil under partial to deep shade.
