Terrestrial shrub or small tree that can grow up to 1 m tall. Leaves are simple, oppositely arranged, papery and glabrous. Leaf blade is broadly elliptic, apex acute, base cordate to rounded with entire margin. Branches are quadrangular when young. Inflorescence a terminal cyme. Locally, it is used as a remedy for women after childbirth and flatulence. The tender stem is made into herbal bath with leaves of Serai wangi ( Andropogon nardus ) and Limau purut (Citrus hystrix ) or made into an infusion. Root decoction is taken for backache, body ache and fatigue. The local people eat the young leaf shoots for hypertension and fever. The plant exhibits antitrypanosomal activity.

It prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil under full sunlight. It is commonly found in fields, in open waste areas, along roadsides, in gardens near villages.
