Terrestrial large vine that can climb up to 9 m high. Leaves are tri-foliate compound, alternately arranged, stiff but flexible, adaxially glabrous and abaxially glaucous. The size and distance between terminal and lateral leaflets is variable. Terminal leaflet is elliptic to broadly elliptical to rhombic, acuminate at apex, acute at base with toothed margin. Lateral leaflet is asymetrically oblong, acute at apex, oblique at base with toothed margin. Stems are thick, woody, circular with lenticels on the surface. Inflorescence a cyme and leaf-opposed. Rhizome decoction and the base of pseudostem is taken for gastrointestinal complaints such as stomachache, diarrhoea, vomiting and indigestion. It is locally known and used as spice in dishes.

It usually grows on scrub, on thicket, coastal forest edges and near to riverbanks. It prefers sandy loamy soil under full sunlight to shade.
