Terrestrial or perennial epiphytic orchid that can grow up to 80 cm tall. Leaves are simple, alternately arranged, thick, leathery and stiff but flexible. Leaf blade is ovate-oblong, rounded or slightly notched at apex, cuneate at base with entire margin and parallel venation. Pseudobulbs are slender, glabrous and covered with dried sheaths. Inflorescence a spike from distal leafless part of stem and solitary. Flowers are white with yellow tinge and fragrant but the flowers often last only for a day. Fruit a blackish-brown

In South east Asia, the juice from young shoots is used against herpes, while the ash of burned Nipa material is used against toothache and headache. The flower sheaths can also be made into an aromatic tea. The plant exhibits antioxidant activity.

It is commonly found on flat grounds, near village houses. It prefers fertile loamy soil under sunlight to partial shade.
