Annual or perennial erect herb than can reach 3 m tall. Leaves are simple, in alternate arrangement, subglabrous to puberulous and glossy. Leaf blade is lanceolate to elliptic, acuminate at apex, narrowly cuneate at base with entire margin and lateral venation. Stems are erect, branched, sometimes woody at base. Inflorescence a solitary borne at leaf axils. Flowers are yellow, fading to orange-yellow. Fruit a cylindrical, dehiscent capsule. The fruit produces two types of seeds where the seeds from the bottom of the capsule are darker brown and longer than the seeds from upper
In Malaysia, leaves are made into a poultice and applied externally to painful joints. In Thailand, the plant is a remedy for abscesses.
It prefers humus-rich, moist soil under shade. It grows along stream banks and on gentle slopes. It is rather rarely found in the wild and is nowhere very common.
